The Humic Acid Story

Before the Garden . . . Humic acid was there

Humus has been around since before the Garden of Eden. In fact humic materials, which include humic acid, fulvic acid and humins, are some of most important but forgotten contributors to the circle of life on our planet. They are so basic that like water, it is easy to forget how important they are and what they contribute – until things start to go wrong.

Humates are life giving

Humate materials are critical for all life. Humates are widely distributed organic carbon–containing compounds found in soils, fresh water, and oceans. They make up 75% of the organic matter found in mineral soils. They are integral to cellular life, death and restoration. Humates form complexes with micro elements and phosphorus that are easily absorbed by plants. The nutrition filled humic acid and fulvic molecules are absorbed through the roots and directly nourish the plants on a cellular level. Research has shown that the presence of humic acid increases seed germination, root growth, vegetation, plant yields and helps to make plants drought and virus resistant.

Healthy soil depends upon the presence of humic materials. Humic acids lose their strength due to oxidation and may decay due to the presence of sodium or aluminum. These complexes provide food for the cells so they can grow and reproduce. Then this nutrition is passed on to other creatures (on land and in water) when they eat the plants, vegetables, seeds or fruits.

How are humates made?

Compost If you have a compost pile, then you are making humates right now. Both humic and fulvic acids result when dead organisms (plants) begin to breakdown biologically and chemically. With humates, it is a “more the merrier” process, because once they formed, they join in to speed up the decomposition of those dead leaves, grass clippings or vegetable peelings. Have you ever dug down deep into the compost pile and felt that the semi–green material was warm to the touch? Well, you were feeling the heat from the chemical reaction as the grass and other organic materials were starting to break apart into smaller and smaller chunks. Humic acid is one of several components that help turn dead vegetation into compost that will help next year’s garden grow.

Humates – Age Counts

Horseshoe Canyon There are new, old and ancient humic materials. If you remember any of your geology lessons you will recall that there are all sort of valuable things hidden under layers of rock, like oil, gemstones, coal and other metals. It is these ancient types of humic acid that have become the focus of many new studies. These great deposits of decomposed animal and plant materials have been compressed by millions of tons of earth over them and sealed away from the elements for over 50 million years. This process has concentrated and locked–in the nutrients and trace minerals. This is the type of humic acid that is used in HumicLIFE™ and other Humic Complex™ products that gives it the nutritional advantage.
