What to Eat for Flu Protection
Why do we need supplements to help us stay healthy?
Did you know that there are ways that nature provides protection against illness? One of the ways that the body defends itself against illness and disease is through the things we eat. When you eat food with more nutrition (vitamins, minerals, protein, fiber, carbohydrates, etc.), then your body responds with more energy, strength, clarity and health.
Unfortunately, due to modern farming methods, our overall soil quality is lacking in minerals and other nutrients. This means that even though we eat the right things they may not give your body what it needs to stay healthy. The facts are disturbing:
- The USDA studies show that over the last 40 years there has been an overall 20 to 80 percent decline of the minerals contained in our fruits, vegetables and grains.
- One study analyzed fruits and vegetables and found that from 1963–1992 that there was a 30% decline in the amount of calcium and iron.1
- Since 1951 the vitamin content has declined in conventionally farmed produce. For example, one study found that it would take two servings of broccoli today to equal the amount of vitamin A in a 1951 serving. In 1951, two peaches provided the RDA amount of Vitamin A for the average woman. In 2009 it would take 53 peaches to equal the same amount of Vitamin A that a women needs daily.2
- Even the government recognized how serious this is. In 1936, U.S. Senate Document 264 states, “The alarming fact is that foods, fruits, vegetables and grains now being raised on million of acres of land no longer contain necessary levels of essential minerals and are starving us. No matter how much of them we eat, no man can eat enough fruits and vegetables to supply his system with what he requires for perfect health because his stomach isn’t big enough to hold them.”
So what happens when the basic foods, which were designed by nature as building blocks for our health, are lacking in nutrition? How can we put the missing elements like minerals and vitamins back into our bodies? There are many ways. This is why people are changing their diets, eating more organic foods, juicing, and taking vitamins and supplements like HumicLIFE™ to build their health and strengthen their body's natural defenses.
How do we get trace minerals normally?
When plants grow they absorb nutrition from the soil and as they ripen they create natural sugars. When we eat a wonderful vine–ripened tomato, those nutrients from the soil and sunlight are transferred into our body to be used for fuel. But even though our modern farming techniques are incredibly efficient and productive, there are some common sense practices that our grandfathers practiced. The nutritional value of our food has been impacted by —
- The overuse of chemical instead of natural fertilizers
- Lack of crop rotation
- Picking fruits when they are green
- Over use of pesticides
- Using genetically modified (GMO) seeds
The demand for higher crop yields and corporate farming technique, while producing high quantities of produce, have reduced the quality and stripped nutrition from our foods. This has resulted in a national epidemic of obesity and the growing number of viral and bacteria illnesses.
Before these farming practices, most people would get their trace minerals by eating food that had been grown in rich soil (with humus/humic acid) or eating meat from animals who had more time grazing. The minute trace elements were absorbed by the roots of the plants and transferred to the fruit, vegetable, grain or grass; which were then taken into the human body as food. When farming practices reduce the nutritional value of our food, then it is imperative to take action and find ways to replace what your body needs.
This is why is it important to eat a healthy and varied diet that includes fresh fruits, vegetables and grains and make sure that you get enough vitamins and minerals. One important point fact to remember is that vitamins that are from natural sources, in liquid form or that are plant based are absorbed by your body more easily. Chemically produced vitamins can be too hard to dissolve or digests.
The recommended “Anti–Flu Diet”
The better the diet, the healthier the immune system – which means the body is better able to fight off infections. To fight colds and flu, your body needs quality fuel with natural vitamins. These are found in fruits and vegetables that are the color of the holidays or great antioxidants – think dark green, red and golden. Vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, leafy lettuce, red onions and sweet potatoes. Fruits such as apples, blueberries, raspberries, acia and pomegranate.
The recommended “Anti–Flu Diet” includes:
- Sweet potatoes
- Spinach
- Lettuce (Leafy – Romaine)
- Broccoli
- Red Onions, raw or cooked
- Turnip Greens
- Beets
- Carrots
- Apples
- Blueberries
- Raspberries
- Blackberries
- Pomegranate
- Salmon — Source of omega–3 fatty acids which fights inflamation
- Yogurt — Helps stimulate the immune system
To build overall wellness during the flu season, try the following:
- Deep Breathing
- Exercise and stretching – Stimulates the immune system
- No Alcohol
- No Sugar (Sugar suppresses the immune system for twenty minutes)
- Meditation
- Other forms of Relaxation
- Immune Boosters
- Extra Sleep – Take a nap to help recharge
None of the above items have been proven to help prevent or lessen the effects of H1N1 virus.
